“Using Your Fingers”

In today's lesson, we will be learning about multiplication facts by creating a fun model instead of memorization.

Students, we are going to be learning how to multiply by nine. The “tricky” way to multiply nine is using an engaging model. On your own, draw your own hands and cut them up to create the model shown below.

After that, hold up all ten fingers and say the problem is 9 x 6. Count six fingers over and put that finger down and say, look, The answer is shown on your fingers starting on the left. The number to the left of the finger that is down is the number of tens, and the number of fingers to the right of the finger that is down is the number of ones. So the answer is 54.

After you are done, post your model so your other classmates can see your creativity. You are not turning this in, but you keep it to help you practice before our next multiplication quiz. Those who don't post will not get a grade.
